Ms. Bethel is a new teacher here at The Walker School. She teaches AP Psychology and Early World History. We have asked Ms. Bethel a few questions about herself and her time here at Walker and here are her answers.
1) My favorite class to teach is art history. I love it because it incorporates so many disciplines like history, psychology, social anthropology, and more. There’s something for everyone! Asking me about art history would be a great way to get me off-topic during class…
2) I wanted to start teaching AP Psychology because I think reflecting on the biological and mental processes that make us who we are can help promote empathy and a greater understanding for others. It’s also the perfect blend of science and social studies. As someone who struggled a lot in science classes growing up, it’s very rewarding to be on the other side of it in a more positive way.
3) I try to keep lessons engaging by considering how long most students have to sit down and stare at a page or a screen during the day. No one is supposed to do that for seven hours a day! Doing hands-on activities or getting students out of their chairs at least once a class is always my goal.
4) I love how many opportunities there are for students to lead. I’ve been so impressed by how many students are club leaders, team captains, event planners, and all of the above. A perfect example is the hours of work and dedication it took to plan and execute Field Day. I had so much fun watching everyone do their part.
5) I expect my students to be willing to challenge themselves while also learning to be patient with themselves. No one gets everything 100% right the first try. My students repeat the same positive affirmations before every test: “I am smart. I am capable. I am NOT my grades.”
Overall, Ms. Bethel is an amazing addition here at The Walker School. You can tell she loves her students and that the students love her! We are so grateful to be able to have all the amazing teachers here at Walker.
