During the week of May 5th, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, known as the Met, hosted the 78th annual Met Gala. The Met is located in Central Park in New York City, and every year, hundreds of celebrities gather to celebrate fashion in their unique ways based on a theme and raise money for the museum’s costume institute. The Met Gala has become a popular event that millions of fans tune in for around the world to see each celebrity’s distinctive interpretation of a theme. This year’s theme was “superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This theme explored the importance of black style and how it has evolved throughout history, shaping individuals’ identities. This year, we saw many amazing styles. Many of them told a story that was crucial to understanding the theme. Here are some breakdowns of a few celebrities’ outfits: 

Pharell Williams: He walked the carpet in a suit he designed with Louis Vuitton covered in pearls, the jacket was perfectly crafted, and you could tell the immense time and effort that went into its making. He blended contemporary tailoring with a modern flair that showcased the evolution of black style. 

Zendaya: She wore a white Louis Vuitton flared pant suit, paired with a large hat. She nodded at the elegance of feminine style and combined it with masculine tailoring that was executed very successfully. 

Angelina Basett: She wore a blue Burberry suit with creative flair. The outfit was pulled together with velvet fabric, a cape, jewelry, and a top hat. 

Sabrinna Carpenter: She wore a maroon fitted suit from Louis Vuitton with floor-length tails with the help of Pharrell Williams. This outfit embodied traditional menswear elements in a cohesive way that tied to her personality. 

Dua Lipa: She arrived at the Met in a custom Chanel black dress with sheer elements. The dress expressed classic tailoring with a modern twist. She paired her one-of-a-kind outfit with eccentric accessories that correlated well with the rest of her outfit. 

Rihanna: She showcased her signature style while also showcasing black identity and celebrating the importance of the theme. Rihanna wore a custom Marc Jacobs modified suit, paired a fitted corset body suit with a cropped tailored jacket, and a large hat that tied it all together. 

These are just a few examples of what celebrities wore to the Met and how their interpretation of a theme was portrayed through their individuality and creativity, but also tied back to a common theme, and celebrated a large part of culture that should be celebrated every day. The Met galas work to transmit such an important message and are applauded. The next Met Gala is May 4th, 2026.
