This past week the Varsity boys golf team racked up a runner-up at the Area Tournament led by the masterful coaching of Wills Bryan (History and Finance Teacher) and Jacob Steinert (pilot and 5 other jobs). The tournament took place at Indian Trace golf course in Murray County, a par 72 course roughly an hour and 15 minutes away from campus. The course is known for having an open and scorable front 9, while the back 9 is much harder and can hurt you with minor mistakes. Leading the way for the Wolverines on the scorecard was Freshman Jack Raebe, shooting an even 72 and placing 4th overall. Only a Freshman, Raebe has been on a tear this season shooting a 71 at the Cobb County Championship early this year for the lowest round in Walker history. This was Raebe’s first high school tournament. Sophomore Sam Miller smashed it on the greens for a 74 and the 9th overall score in the tournament. Shooting a 34 on the front 9, team captain Jonah Douglas shined in his first tournament back to the team in a month, shooting a 75 for the 10th overall score. Sophomore Sam Scheren came in hot with a 78 and the 11th overall score in the tournament. Although the scores were not counted toward the total, Junior captain Owen Lewis shot an 85 for the 22nd overall score, and Junior RJ Griffin shot an 88 for the 32nd overall score; both were very respectable rounds. The total scores tallied to 299, breaking the 300 mark (4 golfers on the team shooting an average of 75). The team is “ready to do some damage,” in the state tournament this year. The tournament takes place in Athens on May 21st at Chimney Oaks golf course. The Wolverines will attempt to dethrone the Mt Paren team after placing runners-up to them in last year’s state tournament. We wish them the best of luck in the state championship and hope they BEAT MT PAREN!
